How is PET made?

“PET” is created from the combination of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, which forms “PET” polymer pellets. Specifically, when two PET raw materials are combined under high temperatures and low vacuum pressure, long polymer chains are formed. As the mixture thickens, the chains get longer. When the appropriate chain length is reached, the reaction is stopped. The spaghetti-like strands of PET are then extruded, quickly cooled, and cut into small balls.
When the resin pellets are reheated to the molten liquid phase, the polymer chains can be stretched in one direction (for fibers) or in two directions (for bottles and films). If the polymer cools rapidly during stretching, the chains freeze with their orientation intact. When stretched, the material becomes very hard.
If “PET” is kept stretched at high temperatures, it slowly crystallizes and gradually becomes more rigid and less flexible. This type of crystalline PET is often used for ready-to-eat containers and trays that can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
