Molten polymer enters a manifold where it is injected through nozzles into a heated hollow preform mold. The periform mold forms the outer shape and is closed around a mandrel (core rod) that forms the inner shape of the preform. The preform consists of a fully formed bottle/can neck with a thick polymer tube attached to form the body.
The preform mold is opened and the core rod is rotated and closed in the empty and cold blow mold. The core rod opens and allows compressed air to enter the preform, which blow it into the shape of the final product.
After a cooling period, the blow mold is opened and the core rod rotates to the bounce position. The produced product is separated from the core rod and leak tested before packaging. The preform and blow mold can have many cavities, typically three to sixteen cavities depending on the product size and output required. There are three sets of core bars that allow for simultaneous preform injection, blow molding and splicing.

Hollow thermoplastic products made with an injection blow molding machine have the same material composition on the inner and outer surfaces. When a molten polymer is injected into a mold cavity through a nozzle, the material is deposited on the inner surfaces of the mold cavity as well as on the surface of the core pin that is positioned between the upper and lower mold cavities. The polymer surrounding the core pin eventually becomes the inner layer of the hollow material, and the polymer layer surrounding the cavity surfaces of the mold eventually becomes the outer layer of the hollow material.

When the second molten polymer is injected, it flows between the layers formed by the first polymer around the core pin and mold cavities, and the second polymer becomes an intermediate layer.
